What is the explosive force of gunpowder in Joules?

I need this for my Research project. What is the explosive force of gunpowder in Joules?
1. Gunpowder does not really explode, it just burns rapidly.

2. There are different formulations of gunpowder and each has slightly different behavior. Gunpowder for fireworks is quite different from gunpowder for a rifle, which is different, in turn, from pistol powder and cannon propellant, etc. (Gunpowder is a mixture, not a compound)

3. The ';force'; is a side-effect of the heat energy and gas that the gunpowder generates when it burns. Unconfined, the force is 0. Thus the force depends on the the extent the gunpowder is confined - its density, burn rate, etc.

4. So, the place to start is with the enthalpy of a representative composition and a simplified burning equation:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gunpowder

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enthalpy

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Standard_en鈥?/a>

If you need more info on this, perhaps you should ask in the Chemistry section.

5. But, if you want a _very_ rough estimate, about 25% of the available energy in the charge becomes the kinetic energy of a rifle bullet. You can get an idea of just how much that is at a black-powder shooting site:

Where can I buy black powder/gunpowder or smokeless powder on the internet?

I am doing an experiment and need to know a website that sells these things. If someone could, please post the exact URL from which you can buy it.

Thanks.Where can I buy black powder/gunpowder or smokeless powder on the internet?
Why not purchase it locally? The shipping cost on black powder makes it extremely ineffective cost-wise to have a small amount directly shipped, if you are eligible to receive it, which I doubt. This is a Class A explosive and if you do not know what that means, you have no business handling it.

Smokeless powder is almost as bad. It is only listed as a Class B Solid Propellant, though.

There are sites where dealers can order, after furnishing copies of their licenses and permits.

How much should i sell gunpowder for?

I made my own gunpowder at home using the normal method of potasium nitrate, charcol etc. Some people i know have expressed intrest in buying this powder from me as it is not readly available around me town. What is a good price for me selling this?

Thanks and my regardsHow much should i sell gunpowder for?
How much, what's the weight, I'd say about $5.00 a poundHow much should i sell gunpowder for?
I wouldnt think you would be able to sell it legally. You may need a licence from your local government maybe even the ATF. I personally would not chance it. Go the extra distance and buy it in town.
Can't be done legally. If caught (by any law enforcement personnel) you will be seen as a threat to local safety. You're asking for a lot more trouble than it's worth. Think about it, if anyone is willing to go through anything but legal channels, they probably aren't going to use said merchandise for anything but hurtful results. I hope you come to your senses and think better of this!
ok, i know that the only answer that you want is how much you should sell your homemade powder for, but first lets go over some other issues that would need answers. im assuming you have made blackpowder intending on using it in a muzzleloading firearm of some kind. you need to know the burn rate in order to properly use the powder. especially if your going to attempt to manufacture smokeless powder intending on using in in modern firearm reloading. you also need to know the level of corrosiveness. and you also need to know the weight per volume of your powder for precise measuring purposes. i suggest finding out how much 1 square inch weighs in grams. if you use your powder without knowing all of these factors it could result in catastrophic failure of your firearm and cause injury of death to the person using the firearm.

once you have the answers to all of those questions then you can sell it by the pound and base your price on your cost to manufacture. for instance if the materials cost you a total of 8 dollars per pound and it took you 1 hour to manufacture a pound of powder then you might sell it for 20 dollars a pound by figuring in your own labor at 12 dollars an hour. but anyone can buy reloading powder over the counter for 20 bucks a pound at any sporting goods store. and they can buy blackpowder or pyrodex for anywhere from 8-15 bucks a pound. so therefore you would need to sell your powder at a comparible price to those already available products. if there is a high demand and no available product then you can charge whatever your customers are willing to pay. so long as you dont feel guilty for hiking the prices just to make money off of people who may not have a lot of it.

good luck and be safe
$5 A pound sounds good to me too
yu kno sellin that stuff is ilegal man wats ur name im turnin u in rite now TELL ME MON
I can't imagine buying ';homemade'; powder from anyone. I don't know how safe it would be or how consistent it would be. If you're going to sell it then sell it for close to the price as you would buy in a store.

I would not recommend selling it at all though.

This has to be a joke right?
I wouldn't advertise, if I were you! Black powder is classed as a Low Explosive and requires a Federal manufacturers' license as well as permits and special insurance, above and beyond the fact you're lucky you haven't already blown yourself to Hell and gone, because this requires all kind of special equipment to do it properly and safely, dummy!

You get caught, still alive, and its' worth about 10 years and ten grand in fines!

When lightning strikes a tree, is there a smell of gunpowder?

We had what we thought was a lightning strike in versailles, ky. around 2pm. we could smell gun powder. When lightning strikes a tree, is there a smell of gunpowder?
Yeah or someone shot your tree hahaWhen lightning strikes a tree, is there a smell of gunpowder?
Only if someone was storing gunpowder in the tree. No seriously! The smell should be of burnt wood. But diffferent woods smell differently.
wow datz scary..but i dont think any1 wood no the answer cuz i don't think any1 goes outside during a storm 2 check lol :)

  • Does feeding dogs gunpowder actually work?

Does it actually make them really mean?Does feeding dogs gunpowder actually work?
This isn't a trolling question, it's an honest question inspired by a dog myth. It's absolutely not true that it will make a dog mean. It will make them sick though.

Feeding dogs raw meat or blood doesn't make them mean either. However that doesn't make them sick.Does feeding dogs gunpowder actually work?
No, it deteriorates the lining of their stomach. It causes serious discomfort and may lead to bleeding ulcers. Don't do it.

Any non-idiot knows dogs protect ppl they love. You feed that dog gun powder and that's not love, it's stupidity! Just teach your dog..... dont poison it.
no it dose not make the dog mean it just poisons them
Not only could that kill your dog, but it could kill the whole neighborhood if he farted near an open flame!!!

    (just kidding....)
No! Foolish nonsense. This would make your dog sick. The sicker it gets the more irritable the dog will get until you kill it. Please do not kill a dog.
no you ******* prick! It is you people that end up killing lots of dpgs and creates breeding houses!!!!!!!!!! I hope that dog bites your nose off!
What dumb-*** school did you graduate from? You must have been in the top 10%!!! I hope they get you for animal cruelty.
Didn't work on my dawg but it sure made dad mean when I put it in his beer.

What is the name for tiny fireworks that's gunpowder wrapped in tissue paper?

They're little things that pop when you throw them at the sidewalk. Very small; I'm not sure if it's fireworks, per se. You can only see the flash if it's dark. I'm not sure if it's really gunpowder in them but it's something that pops when thrown. What is the name for these fireworks? What is the name for tiny fireworks that's gunpowder wrapped in tissue paper?
They're a novelty firework usually called snaps, snappers, or snap pops. It is not gunpowder in them, it's a very small amount of a friction sensitive material along with some small bits of gravel.

You can find purchase them online at places like Skylighter: http://www.skylighter.com/mall/novelty.a鈥?/a>What is the name for tiny fireworks that's gunpowder wrapped in tissue paper?
    Tazmanian Devils
Dave, we are in fireworks industry in Pennsylvania. They are called many names such as snaps, pop its, ground snaps, etc. They are considered a novelty item not fireworks anymore. Many online fireworks stores sell them as they can now legally ship ground transportation i.e. UPS.

Also there are new snaps arriving on the market such as sprite bombs, and plastic capsule snaps, each louder and more spark, our favorite is the sprite bomb as is flashes and has smoke as it smacks the ground.

Please feel free to visit our main store. Thank you

    How does gunpowder work?

I mean like how does it start a reaction? How does gunpowder work?
    Gunpowder burns but it burns very quickly. It's very reactive with oxygen. When enough heat is applied, either externally or from itself, the reaction progresses very rapidly and the gunpowder ';explodes.';

How do I turn soil into gunpowder?

I am a high school Chemistry student and for half of our final lab we must extract calcium nitrate from soil, convert it into potassium nitrate, and allow that to crystalize until it is gunpowder. So far the internet has given me not much help. I need answers ASAP! Thanks. How do I turn soil into gunpowder?
Internet probably wont help too much. Ca(NO3)2 is relatively cheap, so noone stays up at night trying to extract it from soil. Once you do get to KNO3, you need to add granular charcoal and sulfur.

    yes,

In fact there are electronic ignition muzzleloaders on the market. Is it possible to ignite a gunpowder with electricity?
yes, a spark may cause gun powders to ignite
yes, nichrome wire is good for this purpose because it gets very hot, red hot often.

  • Was gunpowder invented before or after the Black Death?

Gunpowder must have been introduced into Europe before the Black death, which occurred around 1349. Around that time, the Hundred Years' war was in progress and IIRC in 1347 the English used primitive artillery or cannons, to help subdue the walled city of Calais on the French side of the English channel. A primitive firearm, the arquebus, was also in use around then. Was gunpowder invented before or after the Black Death?
Just barely before. The French and Brits were using guns during the 100 Years War, though usually as a novelty, with wooden barrels and stone projectiles. The Plague of 1348 was near the beginning of that series of wars. Was gunpowder invented before or after the Black Death?
black death started in europe in 1398

gun power was invented in asia and 1st used in europe in the 11th century
    before

Gunpowder was in use in Europe around the year 1300

Of course inChina it was earlier- but no fixed date is known

What happens when you consume gunpowder?

Say you mistakingly took flashpowder or gunpowder to be something else and you ended up consuming it, or inhaling it, or snorting it...what would happen? Would you explode? What happens when you consume gunpowder?
no, you would probably puke before that happened, but i would be careful and not burp or fart, it could be fatalWhat happens when you consume gunpowder?
Oh boy, mistook it for a little white powder, did we? I assume you are talking about modern smokeless powder and not the traditional black kind. The smokeless powder is made of nitrocellulose and nitroglycerin. The nitroglycerin is used to treat a heart ailment called angina, so there may be a drop in blood pressure, depending on how much was consumed.

Why did the powder monkies had to pick up the sacks of gunpowder barefoot?

Two hundred years ago young boys called ''powder monkeys'' ran below the decks of warships to pick up sacks of black gunpowder for the cannons above. It was ship law that this task must be done barefoot. Explain the proper Physics and the reasoning behind the law and why it might be the most important law in the ship? Why did the powder monkies had to pick up the sacks of gunpowder barefoot?
    Shoes have nails.

Nailheads on th ebottoms of shoes striking other metal might spark.

one spark in a powder magazine = ship sinksWhy did the powder monkies had to pick up the sacks of gunpowder barefoot?
RT's answer may be right and sounds releasable, but some sources would need to be provided. I would say that almost no one on the ship wore shoes anyway because they didn't have traction and gun-powder was probably the most valuable thing on board so if they slipped and spilt the powder it would be rather nasty. Or maybe they boys didn't know how to keep their laces tied so they kept tripping... hey most people couldn't even read then.
because of the constant running, static would build up.the spark was enough to ignite the black powder, therefore no shoes.
Because, if they wore sandals that may create a fire hazard.

Is it possible to ignite gunpowder with a small charge of electricity?

I'm asking because we need a way to remotely light fireworks. We have a remote model rocket launcher that sends a small amount of electricity through a wire. Would this light the gunpowder on the end of a fuse?Is it possible to ignite gunpowder with a small charge of electricity?
    probably

.Is it possible to ignite gunpowder with a small charge of electricity?
Just passing an electric current through gunpowder will not cause it to explode. You have to produce a flame (flash) or get the wire hot enough to ignite ordinary combustible materials.

Your model rocket engine has a ';squib,'; which is a thin strip of metal like the wire in an electrical fuse, surrounded by a high-flash primer charge of powder. The electric current causes the fuse wire to burn through, producing enough heat to ignite the primer charge, which makes a flame that starts the fuel.

You can ignite gunpowder by passing electric current through a fuse wire or a thin strip of aluminum foil. But be careful. If you are doing what you describe, you should get the help of someone who has the technical knowledge about fireworks to do this. It is too easy to electrocute yourself or blow your gluteus maximus off.
Their are different grades or types of gunpowder. You want a high flash rate power.
Only if you produce a spark, or get a resistor to be red hot. otherwise it will not ignite.
yes depending on how close they are.

  • When did knights completely disappear from the battlefield because of gunpowder?

I read some articles about this question but never got to a clear answer. I have seen armor of the 17th century and it still looks pretty thick. So when did the knights disappear, when did muskets and cannons take over as the most important battlefield weapons? When did knights completely disappear from the battlefield because of gunpowder?
Armor even full body armor was still being produced into the 17th and even the 18th c. for display and ceremonies. However, on the actual battlefield full body armor, and knights, were probably phased out as early as the late 15th c. Certainly by the late 16th c. heavily armored knights were no longer a feature of European warfare. When did knights completely disappear from the battlefield because of gunpowder?
The machine gun in the First World War effectively saw an end to Knights in Armour and to Cavalry Charges.
Around the late 17th and early 18th centuries because that is when nobody was using swords and sheilds anymore.
Knights never disappeared from the battlefield. The term ';Knight'; was a title. Only the ARMOUR disappeared. Only in recent times did the TERM ';knight'; become a a social and/or political and not one of a warrior.
Knights and cavalier men disappeared around the introduction of gunpowder into European warfare, maybe as early as the 15th century.

RetiredDoes shooting a rifle leave gunpowder residue on your hands?
no. not if its a bolt action all the gases come out the muzzle which is 2 feet from the shooter plus its going in the other direction. with pistols its different because some of the gun powder comes out the cylinder of the revolver or the slide on a semi auto. most of the people answering this only know what they see on csi.
Yes, and washing your hands does not render it undetectable.
yes, shooting any gun will leave residue on your hands. Like the guy above me said, you cant wash it away.
    sure does

How do I make gunpowder burn faster?

I have all the ingredients and I believe the correct measures of charcoal, sulfur, and potassium nitrate. But I keeping getting a slow burn and this liquidy substance keeps appearing. Don't worry I'm not going to blow anything up :).How do I make gunpowder burn faster?
Aside from the obvious issue that you need to mix this in the right proportions, which you have not, and to which you have likely already gotten good advice, you'll also need to mix better that you likely have up to now.

The first step to this is to grind the individual components up to a much finer powder than you can typically buy. Of course you must grind them up BEFORE you mix them together!

Be careful. How do I make gunpowder burn faster?
Well you are making black powder.Old and out dated.Blackpowder is slow burning and dirty.I question your question. Please dont blow anything up.
I have a good idea about what's wrong, but I am not going to tell you and I hope no one else on YA tells you also. You should leave explosives to the professionals or atleast until you have proper training.

What exactly is the gunpowder-like substance on seedless grapes, and what's the best way to get it off?

It's grey, ashen, and tastes like metal dust. I assume it's some kind of pesticide, but what is it precisely? Is it dangerous? What's the most efficient and thorough way to get it ALL off, as it's quite awful to consume if you miss even a little when rinsing grapes. What exactly is the gunpowder-like substance on seedless grapes, and what's the best way to get it off?
You should rinse all fresh fruit and vegetables in a white vinegar and water solution. What exactly is the gunpowder-like substance on seedless grapes, and what's the best way to get it off?
It is a natural occuring yeast. You can wash it off. But if you drink wine you want the stuff. It is what helps to turn the natural sugars in the grape into alcohol in wine.
Sound like powdery mildew a fungus that attacks grapes. Are these your own grapes? as they occur in humid still weather. Control by spraying with sulphur and avoid watering fruit. Air movement around fruit is beneficial
gawd!!! try to wash it off or brush it off----------------call the produce manager %26amp; ask what that is !!!!!!!!!
Wash your fruits and vegetables. That's the best advice I have. Some people are more sensitive to the pesticides and whatnot they use, but everyone should always wash their produce.

Grapes are great because they are so sturdy. Fill a bowl with lots of fresh cold water and drop the bunch in. You may need to rub each grape to really get them clean.
It is a pesticide and it varies from grower to grower. Wash them with water before eating the grapes. It is not good for you.

  • When was guns and gunpowder invented and who invented them?

Instructions on how to make guns and gunpowder, the way their used, their history, etc. When was guns and gunpowder invented and who invented them?
First important to know is that gunpowder or rather blackpowder was discovered long before a gun was.

the Chinese unlocked the mystery to black powder using chemichals such as

    * a nitrate鈥攖ypically saltpetre (KNO3)鈥攚hich supplies the reaction with oxygen

    * charcoal, which provides fuel for the reaction in the form of carbon (C)

    * sulfur (S), which is also a fuel, lowers the temperature of ignition and helps increase the speed of combustion

This was discovered in the 9th Century by Chinese Alchemist as I said.

Now the gun was discovered by Westerners. The powder made its way across to Europe over the Silkroad. The earliest depiction of a gunpowder weapon is the illustration of a fire-lance on a mid-10th century silk banner from Dunhuang.

So at least a century or more apart that the two were.

The Chinese used them for fireworks and their are rumors that it was used as a weapon, but that is still in debate with scholars. IMO I would say they did use it as a weapon just not a gun. Probably more a canon as some scholars think.

I hope that helps some. When was guns and gunpowder invented and who invented them?
Gunpowder is made up of sulfur, charcoal, and saltpetre (potassium nitrate). 15% sulfur, 10% charcoal, 75% saltpeter. It was first used by the Chinese.

Don't you have history books that have this information?
Chines frist invented the gun powder from sulfur. They originally used it for fireworks and for prototype bombs, but on one point in history probably around 11 th century, they started to shoot it. The first fire arms were introduced to Japan by the Portugese around 16th century. That dramatically changed the way Japanese looked at the warfare. The first japanese fire arms were these muskets made from paper that could be used only once after which the barrel would explode.
China invented gunpowder around the 9th century.

China invented guns and cannons (1250 AD).

The Turkish then made even bigger guns.

Europeans imitated and asimilated these inventions.

The gun was not invented in Europe.

What were the kill-to-death ratios of individual elite soldiers in pre-gunpowder armies?

In movies you can find the warrior-heroes cutting wide swathes through enemy lines, but I doubt this is anything but Hollywood magic. However, I am curious how many men an elite soldier of any pre-gunpowder-era army could've been able to kill over the course of their careers (by their own hand). Thanks in advance! What were the kill-to-death ratios of individual elite soldiers in pre-gunpowder armies?
    thats an interesting question.

first you have to think of the way armies were set up. Many were set up with officers controlling ';big blocks'; of people, and they moved them around as blocks, if you look at those tight roman formations you know what I mean, and it sort of carried on into the napoleanic era. War wasn't about individuals, it was a team effort. It was why the romans (ok--in MY opinion) did so well against the less structured people in Northern Europe.

A single person, no matter how well trained, would not do well against a cohesive unit of soliders.

During the peninsular campaign when Wellington and the spanish fouhgt Napolean, there was a greater use of ';irregualrs'; and that carried on into the american civil war. (also in my opinion, 'cause this kind of opinion is debateable, lol) I think it was the beginnings of what you consider an individual elite solider, like spec ops. Guerrila warfare, right? I would say, the kill ratio would have to be one hundred percent in a ';one on one';, because a group of people can easily take down a single solider, despite hollywood. No body is going to wait and attack people one at a time, and line up to do so, like in movies. Sure you got beserkers and trained people, but even Conan would go down if you were willing to throw away the lives to get up close and personal.

...so I'm gonna say, elite soliders? No. Not in the sense you mean them. I don't believe they existed except maybe in the sense of the renaissance condottiere--you know, swords for hire? There were mercenary bands during many time periods. And maybe you could say the mongols were an army made up of inidividuals, but....the true sum of people one person coud kill over the course of an individual career, taking as an assumption the fact that they would always meet the enemy one on one, away from a battlefield, would be---as many as it took until he went up against the wrong individual.

edited much later to read: I never thought of knights. I guess that's just my preferences showing. People who like miliatry history tend to focus on their favorite time periods and mine is the early napoleanicWhat were the kill-to-death ratios of individual elite soldiers in pre-gunpowder armies?
In the Middle Ages a knight would have been the elite soldier, their non-elite enemy would have been the man-at-arms. In terms of protection and training and equipment they would have a huge advantage, being mounted meant that they could carry the extra weight of armour and use weapons with longer reach from a high position from a highly-trained horse. Wheras the knight was, generally, born into the military life and received weapons and riding training ahead of education from childhood the men-at-arms were drawn from the peasantry and freedman classes, with less training and lighter armour. A knight to knight contest would probably be even, all other things (experience, strength, equipment) being equal, but against lighter-armed troops, especially when their line was broken by a charge gave them a superiority until they were unhorsed. There are situations where the apparent superiority became a liability, facing archers at Agincourt, for example.

Prior to the knight, elite soldiers either fought as units rather than individuals, for example, Immortals, various hoplites etc. or, in the case of the Viking Beserker or those tribal warriors who habitually fought individually rather than as units, their strength, literally, was their strength and size and attitude when these individuals were faced by a disciplined force their effectiveness would be limited, a legion, phalanx or shield-wall would eventually overcome them, frequently resulting in the demoralisation of their force. There is a question of whether this latter type of elite soldier are actually of long-term benefit as a defeat could mean the death of many of the best troops leaving the demoralised less experienced fighters with reduced leadership.

I realise this doesn't answer your question.

Why is it so hard to find gunpowder safety information online?

I've done tons of online searching and can't find one complete, comprehensive site about gunpowder safety and handling. What gives? Why is it so hard to find gunpowder safety information online?
Could be b/c few people directly handle gunpowder as opposed to the products that gunpowder are used in.

Wiki had some basic information. the second link had some more information.

I would suggest looking into the Dept of Transportation... they regulate the ';safe'; transportation of explosives and would probably have detailed info on safe handling of gunpowder.

Good LuckWhy is it so hard to find gunpowder safety information online?
Unless you're searching on the safety precautions in relation to some specific use of gunpowder (e.g., fireworks manufacture, ammunition reloading, muzzle loading firearms), the safety precautions will refer to ';explosives'; generically without singling out gunpowder specifically.

There's also a pretty wide variation in local laws regarding purchase and storage by private individuals... so a ';complete, comprehensive site'; would be rather cumbersome to keep up-to-date.

Try searching using terms related more specifically to your intended use of the gunpowder.

A gun-shop or sporting goods store in your area that is actually selling the stuff will probably be able to answer your questions with regards to the local requirements for legal storage and handling.
I guess you have to know where to look. (I don't but my husband is a firearms instructor, loads his own amo, etc. and gave me all this good stuff.) Gunpowder is the term given to a mechanical mixture of saltpeter, charcoal and sulfur, otherwise known as black powder. Here are several web sites for you:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_powde鈥?/a>

    http://www.goexpowder.com/

(The obove web site has a main page but links on the left. Click on ';handling precautions';.)

For a smokeless powder manual on loading %26amp; reloading with safety instructions go to: http://hodgdon.com/PDF/Hodgdon%20Basic%2鈥?/a> (the safety instructions start on page 5)

If you have or are looking for info on a specific gunpowder/black powder get the manufacturer's name from the cantainer and go to their web site. If one isn't given you can usually google it by typing www.manufacturername.com

Just some general info. Store gunpowder in its original container, keep it capped when not using, don't store it near heat, store in a cool, dry place and don't store powder and primers together. Some cities have specific rules for the storage of gun powder so you should probably check on that. Safety instructions are very important as black powder and gun powder are different: black powder is an explosive and gun powder in a propellant so handling precautions are extremely important. Hope this helps.

Is gunpowder charge and gunpowder capacity 2 different things?

I here things like some rounds have more case capacity then others but I also here things like higher vs lower powder charges for bullets in the same caliber like a 30-30 can have a different powder charge is this the same as a different powder volume or no?

Or is gunpowder charge not the same thing as gunpowder volume in a cartridge?

I hope I'm making sense. Is gunpowder charge and gunpowder capacity 2 different things?
Case capacity is the maximum amount of powder the empty case can accommodate. This is rarely used when loading ammunition. Some powders are faster burning and you use only a small amount of them and still get a good velocity. Others are very slow burning and it takes more of the slow powders to fill the case up. Using a fast burning powder and filling the case completely up ( case capacity) will get you only one shot. Then a free ride to the hospital and you will no longer own a rifle in one piece. Get a reloading manual and set down and read the whole section on reloading with the companies equipment. Always start with the low ';start'; powder charge and work up to a load that is under maximum but is giving you good accuracy and the cases are extracting easily. Avoid maximum loads, they are hard on your rifle and usually not needed for 99% of the hunting you will do.Is gunpowder charge and gunpowder capacity 2 different things?
You can't just take any old propellant and fill the case to the top. There are oodles of different propellants out there, and each has different characteristics from the others. While it often happens that a good load will have about 100% of capacity taken up by the powder, that isn't the end-point at which you stop putting in more. Sometimes the maximum load of propellant is a tiny fraction of the case capacity, and sometimes a lightly compressed load is used, with perhaps 104% loading and the excess actually being shoved into the case as the bullet's loaded into the case. It's a very delicate balance among multiple components.
A specific chambering (say 30-30) will always have a specific powder capacity. This is often given as 'grains of water filled to the rim'

This allows people to compare the total volume of different cases.

Now, an entirely different concept is Powder Charge...which is how much gunpowder a specific recipe calls for. Remember, not all powder is equally powerful. When someone says 'powder charge' they mean a specific amount of a given powder...like 31 grains of IMR 3031. different powder charges even with the same bullets can give different performance, especially in the accuracy department, and in the pressure department as well.

A powder charge of 35 graind of IMR 3031 may work well in a strong modern marlin lever action, but the same charge would blow apart a 100 year old winchester rifle. There, a powder charge of 33 grains of IMR 3031 may be all that it can handle.

Either way, max charge that a gun can handle is rarely the most accurate loading. Possibly in your given rifle a charge of 28 grains of IMR 3031 will give the best results.

Maybe your grandkids are coming over to shoot and you want them to try your 30-30...so you load up some cartridges that have only 24 grains of IMR 3031 so it kicks even less than normal. Heck, maybe a charge of 24 grains is enough quieter you get less complaints from your neighbor.
Case capacity is the volume of the empty case. Powder charges vary from about 20% of the case volume for handgun ammo, up to a little over 100% for some ammo, which causes the powder to be compressed in the loaded round. Typically on two different cartridges which use the same bullet, the smaller capacity case will require less powder to get the same velocity. As an example, my handy manual lists 44.5 grains of a particular powder driving a 150 gr bullet in a .308 at 2802 fps. The same powder and bullet in a .30-06 using 47 grains of powder only drives the bullet at 2752 fps. The case is 99% full for the .308 and 82% full for the .30-06.
Oh yeah, they are very different. Some folks will pour water into an empty case to determine the case capacity. I guess it is nice to know how much the case will hold. However, that capacity is very much different then the powder charge you are going to load the gun with. If you look at any reloading manual, you will find that there are different powder charge weights for the same bullet and case, but each produces different velocities.

Powders have different burn rates. While your case might actually hold 20 grains of gunpowder, that certainly might not be a safe charge load.
The powder charge is the amount of propellant used to cause a projectile to travel down range.

The shell capacity is the total amount of empty volume inside of the case. A good example is the 30-06. A typical load would be a 150 grain bullet with 53 grains of IMR 4350 powder. That would be a powder charge for a round of ammunition. However you can pour 72 grain of powder in the empty 30-06 case to top it off. It will not load a bullet because there is no room left in the case.

    Hope this answers your question.
Plenty of good answers here, so there's no need for me to chime-in. Read what they've written and you will understand the differences of the terms. Capacity refers to total POSSIBLE volume. Charge refers to a specific amount of a specific powder, loaded behind a specific weight of bullet...and must be used with a specific model/type of rifle primer.

When loading rifle or pistol ammuntion, you must not deviate from the listed loading data.
    yes.

Gun powder charge is how much you use to fire a shot. ex. i may use 5 grains to shoot a shot. gun powder capacity is the maximum amount of gun powder i can put into a shot.
Just as it means and sounds. Charge is the amount of powder from your manual and capacity is the max a cartridge will hold.
Put simply, charge is what is in there and capacity is what can go in there.

How has gunpowder impacted us today when invented during the renaissance period?

Gunpowder was invented in the year 1040 in China, so nope, not a renaissance invention. The Renaissance is the time period from approximately 1400 to 1600.How has gunpowder impacted us today when invented during the renaissance period?
First of all, gunpowder was not invented during the renaissance. It was invented sometime in the 9th century in China.

The biggest effect is the rise of nationalism. When gunpowder was introduced into Europe people quickly realized that plate armor and castles were immediately obsolete. The unit of survival became the nation, rather than the hierarchical structure of the nobility. This is still being worked out.How has gunpowder impacted us today when invented during the renaissance period?
Gunpowder was not invented during the Renaissance period. It was invented in China, more than a thousand years ago.

How has it impacted us today? Take away gunpowder and you take away all the handguns that seem to have proliferated so rapidly, and which have taken so many lives. Take away the handguns and the gang warfare would be back to fisticuffs.
Renaissance?? The chinese invented gunpowder in the 9th century.

Everyplace was British back then .. we were British colonies. So, the gunpowder belonged to them. My suggestion is that the colonials had two main purposes: keep the British from using it against them AND augmenting their own meager supply.

What are the gunpowder caps in toy guns called?

They are plastic circles with 8 or 12 shots you can put in a revolving disk in a toy gun. Or 100 shots on long paper strips. What are these called in English? Are there a market for these among collectors? I found some unopened boxes from the early 90s and wondered if I should make an ebay ad for them or just throw them away. But I don't know the English term for these things. What are the gunpowder caps in toy guns called?

How to isolate ingredients from a gunpowder sample?

What is the way to isolate the components from a sample of gunpowder? How to isolate ingredients from a gunpowder sample?
KNO3 is water-soluble, so you can wash it out of the mixture and recrystallize to isolate. The charcoal is insoluble and the sulfur only very slightly water-soluble. You can separate these two by dissolving the sulfur in cardbon disulfide, benzene or toluene, leaving behind the carbon. Check the MSDS sheets for benzene (a carcinogen) and other solvents for sulfur and handle accordingly.

You can also extract the sulfur by sublimation, preferably in vacuo. How to isolate ingredients from a gunpowder sample?
Hi sandi: I love these problems where I apply my knowledge to the solution of a problem I haven't encountered before. As I recall, gunpowder is a mixture of S/C/KNO3. So you first extract with water to remove the ionic KNO3 (remove H2O from KNO3 using an evaporating dish). Dry residue on vac line and then extract with carbon disulphide (CS2; an evil smelling solvent!). Sulfur (as S8) is fairly soluble in CS2; vac down on rotary evaporator in fumehood. Carbon as powdered graphite is completely unreactive and will be the remaining solid. drp

  • How can I get the gunpowder out of shotgun shells without killing myself?

I want to get the gun powder out of the shotgun shell safely but I don't know how.How can I get the gunpowder out of shotgun shells without killing myself?
Just cut across the top ( Not the part with the primer) Dump out the shot, take the wadding out (the plastic thing) then pour out the gun power. The gun powder will not blow up unless it is tightly packed and sealed off in something, its just flash powder. Why do you want to do this anyways? Its a good way to get yourself or somebody else hurt? Figured I would let you know the correct way, because it sounds like you are gonna try anyways so you might as well be informed and SAFE about it. Be careful please. How can I get the gunpowder out of shotgun shells without killing myself?
LOL its quite easy and the likely of killing urself doing so is unlikely, just get a screw driver philips or flat and press in the top of the cartridge and lever the folds out -as the shotgun cartridge is folded in-

then when u have opened in empty the bbs and go around several times to straigten the creases out with the screw driver -on the inside- and then use the screw driver to get the sobot and plug out then empty power.

its quite simple just dont go hitting the primer cap.

i have shot the primer with a rifle and shotgun before it just blew out the sides... not advisable tho.

    i hope that explained it.

be safe, and have common sense.

Note cutting the very top out is ok too, just use a serated blade not just a normal knife
I usually bite down on the plastic end. This causes the crimp to come undone. Dump out the shot, then pull the plastic wad out with a pair of needle nosed pliers. Shotgun shells are harmless unless the primer is hit precisely with a sharp blow, or they are put in a fire.
you can just cut the shell with a knife, but why would you want to do that, you can buy gunpowder at most gun stores, and you can also use the red part of match heads if you dont want to get a thing of gunpowder
jusy buy some, if your in the uk you'll need a licence for gun powder but as far as i know shotgun shells use cordite or something that is actualy classed as a propellant and not an explosive so you dont need a license.
If your good you can break it with your hands. If not just cut through the plastic part of the shell with a knife, dump the shot, then collect the powder.
Open the plastic side and empty out the shot or slug. Behind a plastic cup-like thing lies the gunpowder. Just don't set off the primer, and you will be ok.
Make sure it is pointed in a safe direction and pull the trigger. As long as the muzzle is not pointed at you, you will be safe.
If you want an empty shotgun shell just fire it from a shotgun. If you want gunpowder go to a sporting goods store and buy a can.
I'd follow the method described by Okieroad, except use a pair of channel lock pliers instead of my teeth. But what would be the purpose of this exercise?
    Just cut the shell.
Ever seen the last Indiana Jones movie?? Follow that and you'll be O.K..
shoot the gun and keep the shell. Unless you want to keep the gunpowder, in which case i dont know
let your family out of the house when you start this project.....let us all know how it worked out for you....

How will gunpowder react to a charge of electricity from a AA battery?

And does it have to be commpressed? How will gunpowder react to a charge of electricity from a AA battery?
You would need an actual spark or high level of heat to ignite gunpowder with a battery - compression would certainly aid this, but gunpowder used in shells and bullets is rendered

flashless...meaning it needs an open flame to ignite it...that's why a shell has a primer cap which cause an initial explosion to set off the gunpowder. What you need is flash powder.

Flash powder is a lot less stable and will ignite with an electrical charge. How will gunpowder react to a charge of electricity from a AA battery?
It is possible, although perhaps unlikely, for a spark from an AA battery or for the heat generated by the discharge of an AA battery, to ignite gunpowder.

You should not be playing with this at home.

Your girl needs activated charcoal NOW. She'll very likely have a bleeding ulcer if you don't get help soon. The vet will administer the activated charcoal, and it will absorb the gunpowder. Though you must go now. Hopefully with urgent care, your pit will not have long term damage.

    So hurry!
first of all, how long ago did she ingest the gunpowder, it may have passed through her system by now. but ide still take her to the vet, could cause damage to her kidneys, liver, etc.

you should explain that to your vet - they should know best.

And of course take the dog to the vet.
You need to take the dog to the vet to document what happened to your poor dog. Then go to local animal control to report the crime and make a police report.

You can go to National Animal Poison Control Center at www.napcc.aspca.org for more information
are you serious. like your waiting for us to answer. i guess you hate your dog. let her die. but seriously take her to the vet.

  • Should I reprocess these strawberry preserves? Some jars leaked liquid when I finished processing them.?

Only a small amount, right when they were lifted out of the boiling water. That was last night but this morning, no lids will depress when I test and they are tightly sealed to the jars. If I made a mistake, it was probably in the amount of headspace I used.

This is my very first time canning and I am hoping to do alot more this summer. Probably blueberries, raspberries and tomatoes. Thanks for your help!!Should I reprocess these strawberry preserves? Some jars leaked liquid when I finished processing them.?
You don't need to reprocess them if they are sealed and it sound like they are if you cannot hear a clicking when trying to depress the lids.

It could be you didn't leave enought space or could be that they were processed with too high heat.

That happened to me once with applesauce.

You do not need to process jam.

My mother and grandmother used to put the hot jam into hot jars (right out of boiling water) and seal them with hot lids.

Then they would seal by themselves and be perfectly good for years, if they lasted that long.

I'm not sure if they turned them upside down to cool or not.

Sometimes instead of lids they would use melted parafin on top of the jars sometimes to seal them and that worked fine, too. Then they would put on a lid to keep the mice and bugs out when they were stored in the basement.Should I reprocess these strawberry preserves? Some jars leaked liquid when I finished processing them.?
Yep, sounds like too little head space. If they sealed they should be ok. Processing is important, it prevents possible contamination and spoilage, and you don't want to take chances with botulism poisoning.

Have fun canning! I've been doing it for years and my family insists on getting jams and pickles for Christmas each year.

damp mopping with a mild vinegar solution is widely recommended as a way to clean wood and no wax vinyl or laminate flooring. but if possible, check with your manufacturer first. even diluted, vinegars acidity can ruin some floors, use 1/2 cup white vinegar in 1 gallon (3.7 liters) of warm water. start with a trial application in an inconspicuous area. before applying the solution, squeeze out the mop thoroughly (or just use a spray bottle to moisten the mop head).

  • Anyone tried Maybelline's Dream Liquid Mousse? And what does ';airbrush finish'; mean?

What did you think? I bought some today at Wal-Mart. I currently use Maybelline's Pure Makeup, but I want something with better coverage. I have moderate acne--does anyone know if this stuff makes you breakout worse? I know it's supposed to be full coverage--does it fully conceal acne and acne scars? Also, what the heck does ';airbrush finish'; mean? lolAnyone tried Maybelline's Dream Liquid Mousse? And what does ';airbrush finish'; mean?
my mother has baaad skin. craters...acne scars...

when she uses bare minerals its like..****...completely smooth.

all my friends with bad acne dont use liquid they use minerals.Anyone tried Maybelline's Dream Liquid Mousse? And what does ';airbrush finish'; mean?
I strongly suggest a mineral makeup. Each person will react differently to different foundations, but generally mineral makeup gives maximum coverage.

Air Brushed is a lighter makeup. If you notice, when you use a thick liquid or cream to powder solid, it tends to look caked on, which is what you are doing with it, pressing it into your pores. the air brushed look is exactly as it sounds. It is developed to appear as if it were lightly brushed on your skin rather than smeared into your skin. However, it provides full coverage without looking quite so heavy.

Mineral make up is generally made up of natural products rather than chemicals.

Consider organic foods, they are ';without the harsh chemicals and additional growth supplements';.

It may seem that if you use a heavier make up that it would fill in and cover scar's better, however, the mineral makeup that is made to look air brushed actually covers as well if not better.
The airbrush makeup will be light, but have lots of pigment so that if you are filmed - via a digital camera or HDTV, you can still look natural YET flawless, and not like you have a caked foundation of your face. News anchors and celebrities often get their foundation airbrushed on - because its so light, yet provides FULL coverage (you can build the layers). If you have a few extra dollars, go to a MAC Cosmetics store. Their foundations are TRULY airbrushed and flawless. Its worth it.
Aibrush finish just means that it looks, well, airbrushed.

The way people on TV look.

Try the foundation for I'd say a week, and see if it aggravated your skin. If it does, return it. If you like it, keep it.
